Afton Hefley is Sangster
singer // arranger // musician // educator
Best described as mercurial, Afton Hefley creates music which is at once introspective and vulnerable, yet universal and thought-provoking. The open nature of her performances allows for sweeping & multi-faceted arrangements that range from deep, pulsating grooves to lush polyphonic layers, to austere, lonely vocals often sparsely accompanied by two perfectly plucked guitar tones.
In October of 2013, Afton (aka SANGSTER) released "Human Becoming", her debut EP of original music. That musical sojourn, in addition to the many influential musicians she encountered on her journey, has inspired her to search for new horizons. We now find her putting down the guitar and pen and turning her attention to The Great American Songbook and classic pop tunes, familiar to her past. With artists such as guitarist, Matt Yeakley, pianist, Kait Dunton, and vibraphonist, Nick Mancini in her coterie, we can look forward to riveting, yet subtle and intimate duo and trio performances. Her target venues? Anywhere that allows for inspiration to be sought and for music to resonate in it's purest form.
She appears often as a solo act at many notable venues such as, Left Coast Wine Bar in Glendale, Room 5 in Hollywood, The Hub in Eagle Rock, The Standard Hollywood's Cactus Lounge, and Blue Whale in DTLA.
Afton has performed around the world with Tears For Fears, as a backing vocalist. In and around LA, she has sung regularly with jazz musician and band leader, Nick Mancini at Blue Whale in DTLA, LACMA, The Federal Bar in NOHO, Curve Line Space in Eagle Rock, and Jazz at The CAP in Sherman Oaks, CA. As collaborators, she and Mancini headlined The Oklahoma Jazz Hall Of Fame in Tulsa, OK.
A stone has been turned, the path laid and the needle is pointing North. Afton has found a new gear and is on the move. If you're looking for intimate performances or you're in the market for something with fire power, well look no further; Afton has, at her fingertips, all of LA's most sought-after, experienced and innovative musicians on the creative music scene. The credits on her record reads like a who's-who and she's a unifying force.
"I finally got a chance to listen to Afton’s EP. I was totally floored. Her music (and vocal quality) gets me right in the gut and heart. What a gorgeous sound she has along with an beautiful way of shaping the experience (phrasing). Her songs which have a recurring theme of looking at people with great intentions and potential who are left behind by the forward motion of life is so powerful to me. I think about this all the time. In my estimation she would be the "it person" in the singer/songwriter world if the powers that be knew about her. My god …. what a gift!"
